Obesity epidemic set to cause 100 cancer cases a day

Obesity is the new smoking, the NHS has warned, after calculations showed that cancers caused by obesity will increase by 62 per cent by the end of the next decade.

By then 100 people a day will be getting tumours as a result of excess fat.

Some 360,000 people in Britain will get cancer because of their weight in the next ten years, the projections estimate, meaning that the UK is fast catching up with the US.

Simon Stevens, the head of NHS England, warned that with cases nearly doubling in two decades society needed to act to prevent Britain following the US into an epidemic of weight-fuelled illness.
